Chapter 147 – A Small World
There was a big river on the eastern side of the Limuthburg kingdom, bordering it with the Syllium kingdom.
It wasn’t like the kingdom’s eastern border was drawn along the river all the way, but in the part that bordered the Nelgrandi territory, the border was equal to the river itself.
That said, the river where Cain and the others would be fishing in today wasn’t that border river. That river would be too large for children to fish in. Since the Nelgrandi castle was built quite far away from the border, the border river was far away to begin with.
Today, the river that they would be fishing in was a river flowing inside a forest located not too far away from the castle. Even the deepest part of the river itself would be equal to an adult’s waist, and the current itself wasn’t fast.
Once they arrived at the river, Cain, Kielz, and Ilvareno began flipping over river stones along the bank.
“What are Onii-sama and the others doing?”
“They are looking for river bugs. They are bait needed for fishing.”
Diana questioned the boys’ action as she looked up towards Cordelia, who was standing next to her in the shade. Cordelia answered Diana’s question without even turning around, with her eyes still fixated on the boys.
Cordelia was dressed in a cool, pale blue one-piece dress, with the lace opera gloves and parasol that she received as souvenirs from Cain. From the looks of it, she didn’t have any intention of participating in the fishing herself.

“Ladies, everything is ready. Please come this way.”
Diana and Cordelia turned around at Sasha’s voice. There was a carpet being laid out under the big tree just slightly away from the river, with a basket containing a light meal and a tea set being set on it.
When they looked back at the river’s direction, the boys were still flipping over stones. To Diana, flipping the stones over seemed like an incredibly fun game.
“Sasha…”
Diana tilted her head at Sasha as she looked up and called her name. Her brows were drawn in a troubled expression, her neck slightly tilted, and she looked at her with moist eyes.
“…Since we came here with the purpose of playing in the river today from the beginning, I don’t mind. Cain-sama and Kielz-sama have chosen a spot away from prying eyes, so please go ahead and enjoy yourselves freely.”
“Thank you! I love you, Sasha!”
Without paying any attention to the tea set laid out on the carpet, Diana ran straight towards the riverbank where Cain and the others were at.
Today, Diana was wearing a simple green shirt with few frills and culotte-styled shorts, an outfit that would make it easy for her to move in.

“Cordelia-sama, shall I pour some tea for you?”
“Not now. …Diana is really energetic, isn’t she?”
Sasha reached out to Cordelia who was watching Diana run off. Seeing Cordelia who came with her one piece dress, gloves, and parasol, Sasha thought that she didn’t have any intention to play in the river, so she proposed a break time to her instead. Cordelia then nodded and began walking towards the shade of the tree. At that time.

“Higyaaahhh!”
“Ahahahahahahaha!”
She heard Diana’s scream and Cain’s laughter echoing from behind.
When she turned around, she met eyes with Diana, who was rushing back towards her and Sasha, with her eyes on the verge of tears.
Cain was walking slowly behind her.

“I’ll be playing with Cordelia today!”
Diana said, as she hugged Cordelia’s waist. Cordelia was so surprised, but she instinctively patted the small head that was pressing into her chest.
“It looks like Diana couldn’t handle a whole bucket of river bugs. Would you mind keeping her company for a bit, Cordelia?”
“I don’t mind. But you managed to collect that many river bugs?”
“Pretty much. Do you want to see it, Cordelia?”
“I don’t! Let’s go over there, Diana.”
Apparently, Diana had screamed after seeing a bucket full of squirming river bugs. Diana had no problem holding frogs or lizards, even stag beetles, or even worms unearthed from the flowers, so Cordelia found it odd that Diana would scream at the squirming river bugs, but she grabbed Diana by the shoulders and led her away.
Cain smiled warmly as Diana lifted her face from Cordelia’s chest.
“You are not good with lots of bugs swarming together, huh, Diana? I’ll call you once we have put the bait on the fishing rod and are ready to cast it, so go and play with Cordelia until then.”
Nodding at Cain’s words, Diana took Cordelia’s hand and walked towards the carpet.
Cordelia also thought that seeing riverbugs swarming and moving all around would indeed give one bad feelings after all. Even so, Cordelia found it peculiar that Cain didn’t try to apologize or comfort Diana who screamed due to her feeling disgusted looking at the swarming riverbugs, and instead he laughed at her.
“Cain’s awful. He didn’t have to laugh like that.”
“Onii-sama does that sometimes. He knew that Di was just surprised, so he laughed. …Though I’d be happier if he were to comfort me.”
When Cordelia complained, Diana also nodded and agreed. She was pouting with her cheeks stuffed.
They sat down side by side on the carpet and looked at the items laid out on it, but neither felt hungry or were in the mood for tea, since they left right after they ate their breakfast.
Just as Cordelia was ruminating inside her head, trying to find a topic to talk with, Diana tugged her sleeves.

“Hey, hey, Cordelia. Let’s lie down. Like this.”
Saying that, Diana laid down next to Cordelia. Sasha, who was next to them, clearly noticed it yet feigned ignorance as she turned her line of sight towards the river surface. Perhaps she was implying that she didn’t want to interrupt the young ladies’ relaxed break time.
Seeing that, Cordelia also laid down next to Diana. When they sat next to each other, their position lined up, but perhaps due to their height differences, when they laid down next to each other like this, Diana and Cordelia’s heads didn’t line up.
Diana noticed this when she turned away, still laying down, and so she wriggled closer until her head reached Cordelia’s level.
Cordelia was pretty sure she heard Sasha’s deep sigh from the side.
“Cordelia, lend me your parasol.”
Diana said as she twisted her upper body, reaching for the folded parasol that was lying at the corner of the carpet. She spread out the parasol and set it to shade both their heads.
Cordelia’s parasol was dyed in blue using Syllium’s special dyeing technique. At a first glance, the dyeing made it seem like a defective item with the color full of blotches, but Cain told her that they intentionally dyed it that way.
The sunlight rained incessantly on the parasol which had been dyed to create a deliberate unevenness of color, some part darker, while some lighter.
Each time wind blew, the position of the light also changed, and one would find it beautiful to see how the light passed through the areas of dark and light spots on the parasol.
“Cordelia. It’s so pretty, isn’t it? It’s like we are looking up at the sky from underwater.”
Cordelia, who had been staring absentmindedly at the parasol’s underside, thought that it was exactly just like what Diana just said.
“That’s right. You have a lovely way of seeing things, Diana.”
“Cordelia, do you like swimming?”
With the parasol covering the two of them, they weren’t able to notice what was going on outside. In their own world, Diana whispered as if they were having a secret conversation.
“I like swimming. But I’m still a viscount’s daughter, so I try not to swim too much to prevent my skin from getting tanned.”
“Is that so? I wanted to play in the water with you…”

Cordelia wanted to be someone suitable for Cain, so she had always tried to play the part of a proper noblewoman, even though the other nobility in her rural aristocracy didn’t do that and lived a free and easygoing life. However, it was rather tedious to keep it up all year round, especially when Cain was only there for a few weeks a year. She felt envious towards her older brother, Kielz, who was able to play outside to his heart’s content.
But, when she thought about it, Diana who was supposed to be the duke’s daughter was able to play carefreely like this, and yet, Cain still adored her all the same. Looking at the water surface on the underside of the parasol together with Diana like this, she found herself feeling like she had been silly all this time.
“Diana, shall we play together tomorrow? Let’s go to the river, and this time, let’s see the real sky together through the water.”
“Really?! It’s a promise, okay?!”
Within the small parasol, she found Diana’s radiant smile that was adjacent to her very blinding. As she smiled and squinted her eyes, Cordelia nodded and replied, “It’s a promise.”

After all, this is the same Cain who burst out laughing when everyone else recoiled from his overly realistic Halloween treats.
