Chapter 148 – Dual Wielding Fishing Rods
Kielz, Cain, and Ilvareno stacked up stones at the corner of the riverbank, creating a simple makeshift fish pen. With that, the preparations were complete.
Cain went to call Diana, but Diana and Cordelia were taking a nap together. They laid side by side on the mat, their heads were covered by the parasol. Recalling how there was an outdoor gear called ‘head-only tent’ similar to this back in his previous life, he decided to leave Sasha in charge of them and returned to the river.
“Diana and Cordelia seemed to have fallen asleep. Let’s start fishing by ourselves.”
He picked a bait from the bucket, attached it to the tip of the hook, and lightly tossed the line into the river. The three of them sat side by side on the riverbank, waiting for a fish to take their bait.

“So, this is the area where magical fish appear?”
“Nope. It’s too shallow here, and I’ve never heard of any showing up. I don’t think Father would even let us go to the kind of place where those fish can appear.”
“Magical beasts are delicious, aren’t they…? I wonder if magical fish will taste as good…”
“Cain, you’ve eaten a magical beast before? Oh, got a bite!”
Casting out his line, the first one to catch a fish was Kielz. He lifted his rod, bringing the fish closer to his hand, and he skillfully removed the fish and tossed it into the stone-enclosed pen they made.
“So, this Stiritz-san, what kind of person is she?”
“… Cain, isn’t your line tugging?”
“It’s not. So, what kind of person is Stiritz-san?

Kielz remained silent as he put his hand into the bucket, grabbing a new bait and hooked it. Ilvareno pretended that he didn’t hear the conversation and continued to stare at his line that was submerged in the river.
“How did you know the name Stiritz?”
“Yesterday, after you ran away, Kielz, Cordelia and Diana told me.”
“Tch. Cordie, huh? I’ll get back to her later.”
“You have to be gentle towards girls.”
“That’s it, that’s what I’m talking about! Cain, that attitude of yours has made Cordie misunderstand. What do you plan to do about it?”

Still clasping his fishing rod, Kielz glared at Cain. Cain’s expression seemed to say, “Crap!” as he tried to turn it sideways, but then his eyes met Ilvareno’s. Ilvareno’s expression seemed to say, “Exactly”, and Cain felt slightly betrayed.
Although it was a very unlikely scenario, if the story were to go down the game’s Cain route, the one marrying Diana would be Kielz. Although he already had a sweetheart, it would be decided through their parents’ arrangements that Kielz would be marrying Diana, and so Diana would end up in a loveless marriage.
That was why, Cain thought of advancing Kielz’s relationship with his sweetheart to be that of a betrothal while he still could. Yet that backfired, and Cain had his people-pleasing disposition be called out instead.

“I can do nothing about it. I haven’t been confessed to, so it’s not like I can reject her. That will just show how self-conscious of a guy I am.”
“You do realize that Cordie likes you, right?”
“There’s no way I wouldn’t notice. I am not that dense.”
“If so, do something about it. Don’t you pity Cordie?”
Kielz squinted and glared at Cain. Cain could only shrug and lower his eyebrows, not able to answer.

“Got one!”
Ilvareno raised his voice as he lifted his rod. A fairly large fish with its belly glowing light green was hooked on his rod.
“Oooh, that’s huge! Amazing, Ilvareno!”
“Kielz-sama. Cain-sama has always treated everyone like that. He’s equally kind to everyone, and only Diana-sama’s an exception.”
“Ilvareno…”
Cain thought that he was saved by Ilvareno and was about to change the topic, yet Ilvareno brought the focus right back to the same topic. He watched as Ilvareno removed the fish from the hook. Having fished in the river nearby for daily sustenance in the orphanage, Ilvareno was quite skilled at doing it.
“Cordelia is my cousin, so I think of her like a little sister. I naturally find her adorable, and I can’t possibly be cold to her.”
“I’m not saying you should be cold to her. Hmm…”
“Cain-sama, both of your rods are tugging.”
Hearing Ilvareno’s words, Cain turned his eyes towards the river and found that both of his rods were being pulled. Having used the rod he prepared for Diana as well, Cain was fishing using two rods at the same time.
Ilvareno set aside his rod as he took the rod on Cain’s right hand without saying anything, and began pulling. Having passed one rod to Ilvareno, Cain half-rose to his feet and began rising the only rod remaining in his hands.
The fish dangling at the end of his line was the same fish Ilvareno had caught. He grabbed it as it flopped, forced its mouth open, and removed the hook. Standing up, he threw the fish into the fish pen, before stretching his back. He had been sitting for so long that his body felt stiff.

“Diana is precious to me, so I understand your protective feelings towards your little sister, Kielz. I, too, if Diana were to be treated coldly by someone she liked… I might even kill them.”
“I won’t go that far.”
Kielz denied it seriously. As fellow brothers with little sisters, Cain thought that he and Kielz would be able to understand each other better. Cain was aware of his own good looks and had put them to use before. He treated Cordelia kindly as a friend whose age was close to Diana’s, but the affection he showed was intended to be within the scope of affection towards one’s relative.
“I mean, Cain, your face is too good-looking. Do something about it.”
“There is nothing I can do about that.”
Kielz looked up at Cain mischievously, but Cain only lowered his eyebrows and looked back at Kielz with a troubled expression. Even if he were told to do something about his face, Cain felt troubled. His face was a natural gift, after all.
Ilvareno, having removed the fish from Cain’s rod and tossed it into the pen, tilted his head behind Cain and Kielz.
“Did you just say that we need to do something about Cain-sama’s face?”
Kielz, still staring at Cain, shifted his gaze to Ilvareno. Ilvareno stared back at Kielz’s face calmly.
“Should we just ruin Cain-sama’s face?”
Saying that, Ilvareno turned his line of sight towards Diana who was sleeping on the carpet that was under the tree.
