    Chapter 150 – Terrible Misunderstanding

After they finished devouring their catch this morning as well as the snacks and tea that they had brought, everyone started packing up.

They extinguished the fire using water magic and kicked gravels over the remains of their campfire. They also tore down the stones that they piled up to create the fish pen by the river, returning the water to the river’s flow.

Their fishing spot is a little far from the castle, though the distance isn’t far enough to warrant a carriage. Moreover, the river flows through the forest, making it not possible for carriages to reach the place directly, leaving almost no distance that they could travel by riding on a carriage.

Thus, Sasha and the children walked all the way here to fish, combining the activity of fishing and taking a stroll.

“In the end, Diana didn’t fish at all, huh?”

“I fell asleep while pretending to be in the water under the parasol tent with Cordie.”

“In the water, huh? Shall we go swimming tomorrow? There is a small waterfall a little further on. There’s a spot where the current stops for a moment and the water’s depth makes it just right for swimming.”

Kielz and Cain were walking with three fishing rods each slung over their shoulders, while Ilvareno was carrying a bucket.

Cain and Diana had accompanied Dismire during spring inspection every year, but it was their first time visiting the territory in summer.

Just hearing about summer activities sounded fun, and Diana listened to Kielz’s story eagerly with her face full of anticipation.

    “Cain-sama.”

Ilvareno, who was supposed to be walking behind, stepped in front of Kielz and Cain with a firm voice.

He stood still, glaring ahead with a stern expression.

    Thanks for reading at convallariaslibrary❁ᑕ♡m

Cain followed Ilvareno’s gaze. A few people were walking in the distance, barely discernible. He squinted, trying to get a better look, but all he could make out was that they were men of somewhat shabby appearance.

    “…Those guys!”

    “Are they your acquaintances?”

They were standing still, but the other party was walking towards them. As the figures grew larger and their faces became clearer, Kielz glared with a bitter expression.

“It’s the stupid son of the family in charge of managing the farmlands directly under the lord’s control. He keeps pestering Cordie.”

    “Hmm.”

Cain isn’t oblivious. He is aware that Cordie’s affection towards him goes beyond that of a cousin. On top of it, he’s also aware that he’s quite good-looking.

He looked closely at the man striding towards them with his upper body leaning away, and legs wide apart in such an overbearing manner.

“He isn’t Cordelia’s type, right?” Cain asked.

“Since she doesn’t like him, there is nothing arranged between them.”

Kielz spat out his reply. Kielz was fifteen years old, three years older than Cain, and he always tried to act as a reliable older brother to Cain, Diana, and Cordelia. He wasn’t polite-spoken normally, but he would usually speak in a teasing and pleasant tone.

However, Kielz’s attitude and tone just now, combined with his statement of [stupid son] showed that not only the man wasn’t Cordelia’s type, it was easy to tell that Kielz also disliked him.

Cain evaluated him as probably a worthless person, although he didn’t show it on his expression.

“Oh, isn’t this Viscount Elgrandark’s son? Fishing, huh? Did you catch anything?”

    “Thankfully.”

The stupid son approached and spoke after he reached a distance where his voice was audible.

He seemed to be over twenty years old. At least, one would get a feeling that he had a massive age gap in comparison to the eleven-year-old Cordelia.

“Young Master Kielz1. I have a business with Cordie, so mind if I were to call out to her?”

    “No.”

    “She said no.”

    “Don’t say that.”

When Cain glanced back, Sasha was standing behind Diana and Cordelia, her arms wrapped around the two’s shoulders.

There were three men standing in front of them. There was no guarantee that there won’t be any ambushes, so Sasha standing behind the two of them was the right move. ‘As expected of the girl who aimed to become a flawless attendant!’ Cain praised inside his heart as he returned his line of sight ahead. He would compliment her properly later.

“Isn’t there a welcome party for the duke’s children tomorrow? I’d like Cordie to attend as my partner. As my future fiancee, you see?”

The stupid son said as he leaned his upper body towards the gap between Kielz and Cain to peer into Cordelia who was behind them.

Kielz moved half-step closer to Cain in order to close in the distance, as if trying to hide Cordelia from the stupid son’s line of sight.

“Cordelia doesn’t allow you to call her by her pet name. She will also attend the welcome party with me as her escort, so you aren’t needed.”

Kielz refused firmly, but the stupid son just grinned.

“Welcome party? There’s a welcome party tomorrow?”

“Yeah. In spring, there is usually a welcome party for the duke in the evening. This time, it’s a welcome party for his son and daughter, so it will be held in the afternoon.”

    “I see.”

Cain had never heard about the welcome party. Or rather, the thought of what to wear when he only brought three pairs of undergarments floated in his mind, and he turned to look at Ilvareno.

Ilvareno was staring tensely at the stupid soon. More precisely, he seemed to be wary of the several men standing behind him.

“She said ‘okay’ the other day for the pet name. Just let me talk to Cordie directly. Cordie will surely say that she’ll attend the welcome party with me.”

    That’s a lie!’ Cain thought.

There was no way an eleven-year-old girl would be able to flatly refuse when a man ten years older than her asked her to say ‘yes’. Anyhow, he probably forced her to say ‘yes’ by cornering her against the wall, making her unable to escape, and used their height difference to intimidate her. Cordelia might be a lively and energetic girl, but that didn’t mean she was able to resist an adult man’s insistence.

When Cain glanced back, Cordelia was holding Sasha’s hand that was on her shoulder, clearly looking anxious. Diana’s face was all fired up, as if asking, ‘Is it time for the female knight persona to show up?!’

“Stu… You, are you into young girls? Can’t grab the interest of women your age?”

Cain asked. That was the first thing that came into his mind. He thought that it was a bit strange how he would approach a girl ten years younger than him. Cordelia clearly was frightened, and she also disliked him. If it were someone ordinary, one could just say, ‘I like someone else~’, without any bad feeling. However, Cordelia was clearly disgusted by him.

In response to Cain’s question, the stupid son snorted and made a mocking face. Cain was a bit surprised, since he expected the other party to turn red in anger.

“Our family manages the farmland under the direct control of the lord. The lord is busy overseeing the knight order, so we are managing the lands on his behalf. This is for the future of the territory. It’s a political arrangement. Young Master Kielz will succeed the feudal lord and oversee the knights, while I will marry Cordelia and manage the lands. This will completely settle the current irregular relationship between the feudal lord and their proxy.”

‘Hm?’ Cain tilted his head in confusion. When he looked up at Kielz who was standing next to him, Kielz had a bitter look on his face.

“In other words, it’s not because you like Cordelia, but you want to have a marriage of convenience with Cordelia for the sake of the territory?”

“What a sensible kid. That’s correct.”

    Oh wow.

“But, if that’s the case, Cordelia marrying me would make the most sense, right?”

    “Huh?”

Cain crossed his arms and tilted his head thoughtfully, posing like he was troubled. Adults might see his pose as somewhat mocking. In actuality, Cain was indeed mocking the stupid son.

“Because, you see? You’re aiming for the scenario of [making the management smoother by having the feudal lord’s child marry the acting lord’s child, causing the operation to be the same as a direct management], right?”

“That’s what I said, right? That’s why, Cordie and I…”

Paying no attention to the stupid son’s rambling, Cain looked at Kielz. Kielz looked at Cain’s face with a helpless expression before he shrugged his shoulders.

“The lord of this Nelgrandi territory is Duke Elgrandark. And the person appointed as the representative to manage the territory is Viscount Elgrandark. Haa… According to you, if political marriage is effective, then wouldn’t the marriage be more effective if it were between me, the next duke, and Cordelia, the daughter of the viscount/acting lord?”

Perhaps it couldn’t be helped since the true lord, Dismire, only comes to the territory once a year. Cain thought that it was perfectly fine for the farmers who actually tilled the fields to think of the viscount as their lord. After all, the one who actually managed the territory was indeed the viscount.

However, it would be a problem if the members of the families in charge of running the land directly under the lord’s control were unaware of this fact.

“Don’t talk nonsense! Do you think you can get all the women just because you’re good-looking?!”

The stupid son, whose face had turned bright red by now, strode towards Cain as he intended to grab him.

But before he could walk his final step that would enable his hand to reach Cain, he was stopped.

He tried to put his foot forward, but when he was about to put it down a step away, his ankle was kicked hard from the inside. Instead of touching the ground, the foolish son’s foot slipped outward, causing him to lose his balance as he fell flat, legs spread wide.

    “Don’t touch Cain-sama.”

Ilvareno looked down at the fallen fool with no expression on his face.
