Chapter 122

Divine Beast: Genbu

“Ar-niisama, that, it’s Genbu!”

“Genbu?”1

“One of the four divine beasts, the tortoise. …Ah, but it’s not just an ordinary tortoise, uhm, I wonder how should I say it…”

If I’m not mistaken, Genbu is the divine beast protecting the North, right? And that, uuuhm…

What kind of a divine beast is it, again?

“Genbu is one of the four divine beasts that protects the North, and it’s a tortoise with the tail of a serpent. It is reported that Genbu is a divine beast that receives oracles that appeared from the world of the dead. I wonder if it’s from the elven country’s legend, just like Livyatan?”

“A divine beast just like Livyatan, huh…?”

Ar-niisama held the magic formation on his right hand with his left hand.

Perhaps he was recalling that time’s battle.

If Genbu were to have around the same power as Livyatan, then… It’d surely be a life or death struggle.

The Black Tortoise that was in the depths of the room still didn’t move even an inch so far.

Their head, hands, and feet were all withdrawn back into the depths of their shell, without any sign of movements.

Thank goodness… It seems like Genbu won’t attack as long as we aren’t approaching it, just like Seiryu (The Azure Dragon).2

But the door is tightly shut, so does that mean we won’t be able to get out until we defeat them?

Well, we came here in order to defeat the labyrinth’s master in the first place.

The opponent being Genbu was way out of my imagination, though… But I had always thought that we’d have to defeat them ever since defeating Livyatan.

Therefore, it was surely fate that brought us here, facing off against one another.

Karin-san’s dance increased our defense against the earth element, Ar-niisama and the others applied Protect on themselves, and I applied Protect Shield and Magic Shield.

With this, our preparation’s complete.

Now, everyone. Let’s go!

The tortoise shell located deep within the room heavily jolted as we approached it slowly, one step at a time.

Doon! The quake spread out through the ground.

“It’s this voice!”

Virna-san’s ears were facing towards Genbu’s direction.

“The sound that you’ve been hearing from before was the sound of Genbu’s stirring, huh?”

Now that I remember, didn’t she say that she could hear the earth’s roaring sound?

Although they are moving, they don’t seem to be awake… Eh? Could it be that they’re still half-asleep?

Perhaps because I was thinking of such things, that Genbu suddenly stuck out their face from within the giant shell.

And those eyes were glittering with intelligence befitting a divine beast’s.

“It’s been a long time since I last descended to this ground. This is unusual. The son of the man, the descendant of the beast, and the guardian of the world tree, huh? I see. Adding into the equation, even the Monster King is also here, aren’t they? And then… I see. An interloper, huh?3  Hmhm. What is it that you wish for? Is it wealth, glory, or wisdom?”

Genbu’s low voice echoed in the room.

Wisdom–I wonder if it means that they would tell us the way to reach the Sage Tower?

Besides, why is it that both Livyatan and Genbu are calling me an interloper?

Will they be able to tell me the answers to everything I am questioning about this world?

“If we were to answer with ‘wisdom’, would you be able to tell us everything that we seek the answers to?”

In response to Ar-niisama’s question, Genbu laughed with a voice that caused the whole room to vibrate.

“Hoohoohoo. Son of the man, don’t you think that’s too greedy? The truth must be singular. If that is the case, then there is only one true answer. Don’t you think that the one question for which you seek the answer with all your might is the one that holds value?”

“Then… If we were to win, we’d like you to guide us to reach the Sage Tower.”

“Did you just say the Sage Tower?!”

Genbu’s eyes were suddenly wide open as they were staring at Ar-niisama’s face.

Then, their line of sight shifted to the one next to him–to my face.

“Is that so? I see! There were people who have sought the Sage Tower in the past, but of all people, why would an interloper seek it out?! No, wait. Could it be…”

Genbu stretched out their neck further and looked at me.

“Hahaha! This is amusing. You were able to blend in, huh? Very well. In the event that you lot are able to defeat me, I’ll instruct you about the way towards the Sage Tower. And not only that, I will also give you one of the keys.”

“Then, we won’t hold back and defeat you.”

Genbu narrowed their eyes and looked at Ar-niisama.

“The son of the man has spoken. Then, show me your power!”

After saying that, Genbu took out their long legs–longer than a tortoise’s–from within their shell.

The earth trembled once more.

The ground flickered as if it was an earthquake, and even standing became difficult.

By the time we were able to stand back up and correct our postures, two gargoyles that were exactly like the ones in the entrance suddenly appeared.

“Kekekeke…”

“Khekhekhekhe…”

The laughing gargoyles attacked. Perhaps it was due to the fact that their bodies were made of stones that we weren’t able to inflict any significant damage on them.

Moreover, it was such a trouble that they were flying in the sky.

“Dammit! They keep evading!”

When Frank-san tried to attack them, they’d take off to the sky where his fists couldn’t reach.

But Frank-san’s occupation is a priest, alright? Please don’t forget it.

“Frank-san, please cover the healing. Leave the gargoyles to me. Wind Lance! Goooooo!”

The wind lances pierced the gargoyles.

With a whoosh, countless lances pierced the gargoyles, turning them into a mere lump of stones.

As I avoided the falling stones, I looked in the direction where Genbu was.

Ar-niisama and Amanda-san’s magic swords hit the hard shell here and there, causing the area to get cracked.

Eh? They aren’t that strong…?

Compared to our battle with Livyatan back then, I felt like there wasn’t any resistance.

But since Genbu was said to specialize in defense and their offensive power wasn’t that strong, it might simply mean that our offensive power was high.

After all, I had leveled up. That should mean Ar-niisama and the others’ abilities were also increased, even if it was only their weapon proficiency, right?

Does that mean we’ve become quite powerful now?

Genbu’s attacks mainly consist of crushing enemies with their hard shell and biting with the snake on their tail.

In the game, there was an additional attack called “Earthquake”, a technique where they’d be able to attack us through the quakes of the ground4. But at the moment, it seemed like this additional move wasn’t present.

“Flashing Water Stream!”

“Split Flame Blade!”

“Surging Fist!”

“Twin Sword Dance!”

Everyone used their ultimate moves to attack Genbu.

I was thinking of joining in this attack, but before that, Genbu twitched and remained motionless.

We managed to easily defeat it, it was way easier than what I had expected, but…

But with this, we’d be able to know the method to go to the Sage Tower, right?!

“Genbu, you promised. We want you to tell us how we can go to the Sage Tower.”

Ar-niisama went towards the defeated Genbu. I also tagged along since I wanted to hear about the Sage Tower from Genbu in detail.

Perhaps sensing our presence, Genbu’s closed eyes slightly opened.

“You’ve done quite well, but… This isn’t the end.”

“What do you mean?”

“If it is wisdom that you seek, then prove to me that you’re a vessel worthy of wisdom.”

After saying that, Genbu stood up with their hind legs.

That is–!

An earthquake is coming!

As Genbu’s body fell forward, a large crack formed in the ground.

Without the time to avoid it, I ended up being swallowed by the crevice.

“Yuuri!”

“Ar-niisamaaa–!”

I grabbed the hand that Ar-niisama held out towards me..

Thus, we fell together into the bottomless abyss.

  1. The ‘genbu’ is written in hiragana, as opposed to when Yuuri mentioned it in kanji. It implies that Argo doesn’t know what genbu is.
  2. Azure Dragon / blue dragon: a god that’s said to rule over the eastern heavens as well as an auspicious creature in Chinese mythology.
  3. I just found a good term to this, apologies. Previously I wrote it as ‘someone who had blended’, in chapter 78.
  4. The earthquake in the “ “ is written in katakana, giving off a foreign/western name of the attack, while the quakes of the ground at the end of the sentence is written in kanji with the meaning of earthquake. I tried to distinguish between the two earthquakes.
