Chapter 4

The Person Waiting for the Two Girls

Part 1/7

–The next day’s morning.

Egil was eating together with Kaya and Fie.

“…Kaya, you seem happy.”

“I-is that so? I’m the same as usual, though?”

Egil might not notice it, but Fie, who had been acquainted with her since a long time ago, could clearly see it.

“Yeah. Were you happy after you became one with Egil?”

“–Wha!”

Kaya’s face reddened as her big ears twitched several times.

The movement of one’s tails and ears depended on their emotion. Egil somehow came to understand it during yesterday’s entanglement. Kaya bashfully turned her back on Egil as she held down the ears that exposed her emotion, then she slightly nodded.

“Yeah, I was happy. Having someone I can depend on feels this calming, huh?”

“I see. It’s good, isn’t it, Kaya?”

Fie felt happy for Kaya, as her close friend. Kaya meekly responded, “Thanks.”

“Oh, that’s right.”

Everything was settled after Egil was united with Kaya. It would be good if things were as simple as that, but his purpose of coming all the way here was to have Kaya and the residents of Lake Metropolis that Kaya governed to migrate to the nameless kingdom.

“Kaya. For now, is there any possibility that we can have everyone migrate?”

“That’s right…”

Kaya’s hands stopped from eating her meal as she fell into thoughts.

“Quite a lot of young people are thinking that they’d like to break free from this environment. That’s why, I think there will be a lot of youngsters who will agree. I’ll say that I’ve made a contract with Egil and that I can’t be separated from Egil, thus living here will be hard.”

“Without the power of a nine-tailed fox, it’s only a matter of time before we’re destroyed by the Country of Demise.”

“Yeah. However, I don’t think that the older citizens who’ve spent several tens of years living here will consent to the migration that easily. It might even be possible for them to say that they’d like to remain here even without me.”

“Attachment to one’s hometown, huh?”

For the young people who had only lived in this place for a brief moment, there might be little to no resistance towards the idea of moving from this place. However, for people who had spent the majority of their life living here, they might want to meet their end in this very same place.

“We can only try to persuade them as much as possible. Even if we are to stay here, there’s no end to this strife.”

“That’s right. Speaking of which, what about the other two areas?”

This topic hadn’t been brought up–not even once–since Egil came here, but there was [Prairie Country] in the east, [Occultic Ordinance Fortress] in the west. Kaya said, “That’s right,” before pausing.

“The other two areas are indifferent towards our strife with the Country of Demise. Those Sun and Moon girls said that the Country of Demise’s objective was my nine-tailed fox’s power, didn’t they?”

“They won’t lend a hand because the strife doesn’t harm them at all, huh? But, supposing that Lake Metropolis fell into the Country of Demise’s possession, wouldn’t their next target be either of them?”

“Most likely, that is the case. However, if it comes to that, those two countries will immediately surrender, won’t they? That’s why, they won’t join hands with Lake Metropolis in fighting against the Country of Demise. Rather, they’d want us to somehow endure and earn them years of time.”

“They don’t want to meddle, thinking that it would be able to avoid them any trouble, huh?” Kaya said with a wry smile.

In short, as long as they weren’t involved in this strife, they won’t be harmed. The more this strife was prolonged, they’d be able to live in peace without having to surrender.

With this, it was quite obvious why nobody would want to aid Lake Metropolis.

Egil finished his meal and stood up.

“…For the time being, let’s talk with the others. It’s up to the citizens what they’d like to do from hereon.”

As he said that, the other two nodded.

Even if they were worried about it here, nothing would proceed. Egil wanted Kaya and all of Lake Metropolis’ inhabitants to migrate to Fezelis continent, but some people might decide they wanted to stay behind instead. In that case, they should be able to live in this area peacefully. It was something that Egil ought to do, as he had become Kaya’s contractor.

Kaya started the assembly with all the citizens gathered. Then, she told all of Lake Metropolis’ residents that they’d all be migrating to the Fezelis continent.

The residents began to get noisy hearing Kaya’s speech. After telling everyone to calm, Kaya explained in order from how she was in a contract with Egil, then that Egil would guarantee their lives in the Fezelis continent after migrating, and how the adventurers would be protecting them, thus they would be able to spend their lives peacefully in the new continent without any strife.

As Kaya and Egil communicated it while looking at each and every one of their eyes, the young residents’ expressions gradually brightened. However, the elderly people who had emotional attachment to this place expressed their dissatisfaction.

“…Kaya-sama. We have been protected by the nine-tailed fox’s power that’s been inherited in Kaya-sama’s family. Without you, we won’t be able to live here. To move from here towards the kingdom that person governs might be the right thing to do… However, this area is our homeland. It’s impossible to abandon it that easily.”

“That’s right. This senile old man wants to meet his end in this place… Would you somehow please let me remain in this area?”

“That is…”

Although it was within expectations, facing it in reality was still tough.

Kaya looked at the residents’ expressions as she cast her eyes downward apologetically, not being able to force anything.

“…Our ancestors are here… I understand that everyone has spent a long time in this land. This continent is our hometown… But even so, I’d like to go to a new continent together with everyone.”

“Why is that…?”

“I was born in this land here. To me, this area is a very important place. However, I treasure all of you who are living here more than that. I don’t want to see anyone losing their lives anymore.”

People over the land. Surely that’s what’s important. Such a mindset surely wasn’t wrong, but even so, to the people with emotional attachment to this land, the people’s lives might be of an equal value with this land.

“May I say something…?”

Egil’s voice resounded within the silence. He had never become the center of attention in front of this many people before. Each and every gazes felt like it was sharply piercing his slightly trembling body that was caused by the tension.

He had much more respect for Kaya now, for she was able to stand firm in this kind of situation many times up until now. He thought that this was something one needed to do, if they were to become a leader that stood out amongst their people.

“I can’t say that there won’t be any strife at all in the land where I want everyone to migrate to. It is even possible for the enemies we have to fight to change from people to monsters. There might be people who’d hate me for taking everyone–or let alone, for taking Kaya–to such a place.”

There was hatred in some of the surrounding gazes directed towards him. Even then, Egil continued. After all, he had decided it last night when he was intertwined with Kaya.

“I will make Kaya happy. No matter what happens, I will. Then, I’d also like to bring happiness to everyone here, for you are the people that Kaya cherishes. –I will protect everyone’s lives. I promise, no matter what happens.”

The only thing he could say was such an unreliable promise of protecting them.

However, he had to swear on that no matter what. Because they’d be entrusting their everything.

“That’s why I’d like you to believe in my words and come with me. Believe in me, and more than anyone else, believe in Kaya! I’d like you to walk together with me towards the path where everyone can become happy!”

The residents quietly listened to Egil’s plea.

“Let me say a few words, too. I want you to believe in Egil-san. I thought that it’d be alright to entrust everything to him. If it’s him, he’d be able to carry the hardship I’ve been carrying so far and the lives of each and every one who’s been living here. But not just him, I’d like to shoulder it together. Please, somehow, believe in me and Egil-san!”

The silence continued even after hearing Kaya’s plea. Did it reach them? Tension and anxiety prevented Egil from looking into the eyes of the people who were present there.

–However,

“I-I will believe it!”

One young man opened his mouth. He successfully gathered his surroundings attention in one go, and even if his face reddened in embarrassment, he strongly continued.

“M-my mother… Ever since my father was killed, she hadn’t smiled that much anymore… Whenever the Country of Demise comes attacking, it’s always painful… T-that’s why, I want to believe in it! If it can free my mother from this bitterness!”

The woman next to the talking man–who seemed like his mother–had tears in her eyes.

“I-I will also follow you! Kaya-sama is our benefactor who’s always rescued Lake Metropolis many times over. There’s no way I can go against Kaya-sama’s plea!”

As if responding with the man’s words, one, and yet another one person raised their hands in approval.

As the approval spread, before one even noticed it, even some of those who initially opposed the idea finally turned their opposition to approval.

“Thank goodness, right, Egil?”

Fie said as she looked at Egil and Kaya’s speech, but Egil couldn’t be delighted just yet. Even if Kaya and the others left this area, there were still people who wished to remain in this place. That’s why, Egil said to everyone.

“I’d like to allow those who wish to remain in this land to be able to live here safely. That’s why, I’m thinking of settling things with the Country of Demise.”

If the Country of Demise’s objective was really the nine-tailed fox’s power possessed by Kaya, without Kaya here, there shouldn’t be any need for them to fight against the remaining Lake Metropolis residents.

Without Kaya here, this area wouldn’t be attacked by the Country of Demise. However,

“Fezelis continent’s adventurers are assisting the Country of Demise. In addition, they’re the people belonging to the Dark Guild. They will definitely chase after us no matter where we go.”

“Which means it’s meaningless even if we leave this place?”

Fie asked, and Egil responded by nodding.

Regardless of Reveie, the people of the Dark Guild wouldn’t think of giving Kaya up through a smooth dialogue alone, and just because Kaya was away from this land doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t harm this area. That being the case, in order to migrate with a peace of mind, they couldn’t avoid fighting against the Country of Demise here.

“You’re going to fight them…?”

Kaya asked with uneasiness in her eyes. Egil answered.

“I’m afraid that is very likely. But it’s going to be alright. I’ll definitely return safely.”

“…If that’s the case, I’ll come with you, too.”

“But…”

“This is Lake Metropolis’ problem. It’s meaningless if the strife is going to be over without me being there.”

“Kaya-sama! Please let us go, too!”

The residents rushed over to Kaya.

“For the sake of our brethrens who were killed by them, and… so that we could free our friends who are manipulated by them.”

“–That is!”

“Friends who are manipulated by them…?”

Kaya tried to stop the residents’ words in her fluster, but their words clearly entered Egil and Fie’s ears. Then, Fie asked Kaya.

“Kaya. Could the corpses’ identity be…”

In response to Fie’s unusually powerful voice, Kaya showed an uncomfortable expression on her face.

“…Sorry for keeping quiet about it. The corpses are originally the residents of this Lake Metropolis. Country of Demise’s necromancers are controlling the dead.”

Hearing those words, Fie’s expressions were filled with sorrow.
