Chapter 4
The Person Waiting for the Two Girls
Part 5/7
“Welcome, to the kingdom of this me!”
When they barged into the room, the blond-haired man who was sitting on the throne spread both of his hands, welcoming Egil and the others with his cold smile.
The Sun and Moon Masked Girls were right next to the man, and lying on their feet was the feeble body of a plump man who was wearing a crown on his head. Though it was such a bizarre spectacle to behold, Egil immediately understood the situation.
“You are the puppeteer, aren’t you…?”
Egil asked the blond-haired man. The man then crossed his legs and rested his chin in one of his hands as he grinned.

“Yes, that’s right. This I, is the puppeteer, Guy Fozaster. You bastard are?”
“I am–”
“–Egil Voltz. You are my fellow S-rank adventurer.”
Before Egil gave his name, a familiar voice reverberated in the room.
When they turned around, there was a girl whose light purple hair grew as long as her breasts and her black dress was embroidered with a red thread. She looked at Egil as she smiled.
“Reveie… you’ve come as well, huh?”
“Yes, I have an errand to do here.”
The traitor at Goliath Fortress Invasion Battle, as well as the member of the Dark Guild [Pandora of Demise].
The fact that she is here means…
“You are also a member of the guild that Reveie belongs to, aren’t you?”
As those words were thrown to Guy, he looked at Reveie and heaved a sigh.
“Haa… What, so you’re Reveie’s acquaintance, huh? So, are you coming here to negotiate?”
“Negotiate?”
“Yeah, that’s right. If you hand over the woman possessing that nine-tailed evil god’s power here, I’ll let you pass. I’ll also give you some remuneration. How about it?”
“…Are you being serious?”
“Hm? Yeah, I’m serious, dead serious. Very, very dead serious. So, what do you say?”
He glanced at Reveie, still with his smiling expression. Apparently, he was being serious.

“I see. Too bad, but I won’t go through with this deal.”
“Haa? Why? You also know it, don’t you? If fellow S-rank adventurers were to fight, it’d be very dangerous and could even make this land perish. I am quite fond of this land. That’s why, I don’t really want to fight you. Got it?”
“Yeah, this land might be destroyed.”
“If that’s the case–”
“Even so, I don’t want to hand Kaya over to you. I will kill you here and put an end to everything.”
Egil launched the swords that he formed at Guy.
The smile that was just there until just now, disappeared.
“…Stop him, my servants!”
The two masked girls suddenly became Guy’s shield as they repelled the swords.
Egil tried to chase him, but…

“Egil-san!”
A herd of corpses appeared from between the thrones.
All of them were swarming in front of Guy, blocking the way.
“It can’t be helped since you refused the deal. Moreover, as long as I obtain you lot’s corpses, this I will use you to form an army of manservants, and I’ll only grow stronger! Go, the manservants of this I!”
At that moment, the two girls respectively wearing the masks of sun and moon jumped very highly and closed in the gap between them and Egil, swinging downwards their weapons that felt like they were different somehow.
Then, Reveie’s voice could be heard.
“Egil. Don’t kill those two. You’re going to regret it.”

“–…?!”
Flustered at Reveie’s unforeseen words, Egil dodged their attacks and distanced himself from them. There seemed to be a hidden meaning behind Reveie’s expression.
“What do you mean, Reveie?!”
“I won’t say it. Here, we are enemies. However, if you kill those two, you’ll forever regret it. Then, the person precious to you will continue to feel anguish.”
“What do you–”
Egil didn’t know the two girls’ identities. Even so,
“…I will handle them. Fie and Kaya, please handle the corpses.”
Reveie won’t say anything pointless. She shouldn’t have said things simply to stall time. As he dodged the two girls’ attacks, Egil distanced himself from Kaya and Fie as he desperately deliberated in his mind.
Trying to hold the corpses back, Fie clenched her fists while Kaya fought using her own blood. However, the number of the corpses didn’t go down as more kept coming in from between the thrones. The bodies that couldn’t die ought to fight to the last. The soulless corpses moved around as if they were possessed by something, just like marionettes.

“We have to stop them.”
Guy, the puppeteer, was having fun as if he was spectating a fighting arena. If he wasn’t defeated, the battle won’t end. However, the two girls were blocking Egil’s path, and so Egil couldn’t come any closer to Guy. As Egil alternatively looked at the two girls then Fie and Kaya’s fight with the corpses, he desperately pondered over in a rush.
As Egil probed the movements of the two’s sword and dagger, he also swung his as he summoned other swords from his back, then he attacked back. Even so, the two girls easily dodged his attacks.
In terms of ability and experiences, it was undeniable that Egil was far superior than them, but he couldn’t break through. Reveie’s words “You’re going to regret it” couldn’t leave his head, giving birth to a slight hesitation, so he couldn’t release his full power.
The manipulated corpses couldn’t feel anything. But since the opponents were alive, he could clearly feel the two’s breathing, muscle movements, smell, and temperature as time elapsed.
Killing living humans.
It is a natural thing to do on the battlefield. If you don’t kill, you’ll be killed. That’s why you have to do it. Despite that, Egil tried to stop them without killing them. As to why, even Egil himself couldn’t tell.

“It will be granted–”
“–It will be fulfilled.”
Upon hearing the two’s voices, Egil remembered someone. Someone who was always near him. He was reminded of that person who was kind, strong, yet sometimes a crybaby.
But that recollection was so hazy that he couldn’t tell who that person might be. Even so, just as Reveie said, Egil discerned by his intuition that he’d regret it if he were to kill the two girls. That was why he stopped attacks that targeted their hearts, and changed his attacks’ targets to the sun and moon masks that covered their true faces.
He defended against their fierce attacks and when he noticed an opening, he reached for it and managed to remove the sun mask. Right after that, the moon mask was removed as well.
–He finally saw their real faces.
Their well-ordered lovely features were as clear as the day. Then, the fact that two girls were crying, too.
–Just like her back in that day.
“…Selina…?”
The girls’ faces were very similar to Selina.
He finally understood the reason why Reveie advised him not to kill the girls no matter what. If he were to kill them, Egil couldn’t return to her, and to everyone’s side any longer.
“Names… Would you please tell me your names?”
Their hands stopped attacking as they listened. Then, the two obediently gave their names.
“–Khloe Maverick.”
“–Siloe Maverick.”
(T/N: Their first names written in katakana are “Kuroe” and “Shiroe”, and fun fact is, “Kuro” means “black” and “Shiro” means “white”. I adapted their names to sound more like English names rather than using “Kuroe” and “Shiroe” as they are, because their names are written in katakana (unlike Kaya’s name which is in kanji and her character clearly has a relation to Japanese culture so the name makes sense), plus their sister’s name is Selina. It doesn’t really make sense to have their names written in Japanese spelling. After thinking for a while, I settled with Khloe and Siloe. And ‘Khloe’ not ‘Chloe’ because I’d like both of them to retain the same initial as their katakana names, “S” and “K”.)

Hearing the names, Egil was overwhelmed with both happiness and sadness.
“I-is that so… So, that is how it is, huh…”
“…So… So what?”
“You will still die… here anyway.”
They were still brainwashed, so they quickly regained their fighting spirit as they once again ran towards him with weapons in their arms.
So, Egil put his weapon back and headed to the two of them while smiling.
“–Selina Maverick is worried about the two of you. Let’s go home together.”
“”–…!”””
At that moment, the two of them dropped their weapons on the spot.
“How did you, about Onee-chan…”
“C-could you, could you be the slave trader who kidnapped Onee-chan?!”
“Wrong. Selina is my precious woman. She is now living in a safe place. I heard about the two of you from her. You were caught by the same slave trader, but you two managed to escape. However, she couldn’t see you anymore. She said that she was worried sick. …Believe me, I will absolutely bring you back to Selina’s side.”
Khloe was shaking. Perhaps it was the same with Siloe, the moon-masked girl. That was why Egil reached out to both of them. However,

“–Oi, my servants! What are you doing? Hurry and kill him!”
Guy put forward his left hand and ordered. Right at that moment, Khloe and Siloe’s bodies stiffened as if they were being bound by something, as their hands reached to pick up the masks that fell. Then, Reveie’s voice resounded.
“Egil! You should break their masks. As long as they are there, the puppeteer’s compelling power won’t disappear completely.”
“Oi, Reveie! You, are you betraying this me?!”
“We might belong to the same guild, but we aren’t allies. I am siding with those whose objective is closer to mine. Right now, that is Egil. Egil, hurry and do it!”
As Reveie told, Egil generated swords that were aimed towards the sun and the moon masks. Although the sun mask was successfully broken, the moon mask returned to Siloe whose magic wasn’t untied yet, as the girl swung her dagger at Egil once more. Egil quickly defended by using his sword, but he was still pushed by the strong power, the strength that was clearly not the girl’s.
“Siloe… Stop…! There is someone who knows Onee-chan, so you don’t need to yield to that man any longer!”
At Khloe’s words, Siloe’s shoulders hopped indicating she had heard her, but Siloe’s body didn’t seem to do what she wanted to do. Looking at that, Guy suppressed his annoyance and looked at Khloe.
“…Tch, I couldn’t control one of the two fragments, huh? But fine, it won’t be a problem as long as I pour all of my power into that girl.”

As if regaining his composure, Guy issued an order to Siloe.
“…Oi, servant, kill that man.”
The puppeteer’s power sealed his words, snatching away her freedom, and thus she was coerced to kill Egil.
Her heart disappeared. That was how it felt. Still, Egil saw that a single tear fell down from her eyes, through the cracks that were formed at the moon mask Siloe was wearing.
She was happy knowing that she’d be able to meet Selina. Yet, her heart was ruled over little by little, and she was going to close up the path to meeting Selina with her own hands.
“I will end it.”
Egil entrusted the battle with Siloe to the swords that he had just summoned, as he went straight towards Guy who was issuing out his orders from the thrones.
His expression was so terrifying that he would surely not want to show it to anyone. Guy’s whole body responded with a great shock and he raised his voice in a fluster.
“Oi, oi, your opponent is that girl, isn’t it? …Oi, Siloe! Hurry and stop him!”
Cue to Guy’s scream, Siloe closed in on Egil in one go as if she was strung by some kind of a thread, and she swung her dagger at Egil’s back. A slashing attack combined with agility. But, Egil didn’t even turn around as he repelled her attack with the swords he summoned. Over and over again, protecting him against Siloe’s fierce attacks.
Metallic clanks reverberated in between the thrones, and the path where Egil walked on had lots of swords scattered around. Siloe was aiming at Egil’s feet as she fired up the poison-laced missiles, but even those easily fell before they could reach Egil.
Nobody could no longer stop him.
