Chapter 62

The Owner of the Ring

The name of the person in the inn is Carl-san after all, the owner of the dropped ring.

As long as we hand over the ring, we’ll be able to complete the quest—

“There’s no way I’d give away the ring I received from you, right? It became slightly loose and dropped without me noticing.”

“I have never heard about a ring that just dropped! Don’t give me such an obvious lie!”

“It’s not a lie. See. In order to marry you, I’ve been busy taking over the inn and that made me lose weight, can’t you see that? That’s why the ring became too big for me and I was thinking of getting it fixed, but I ended up dropping it before that.”

“…That is right, you shouldn’t have lost your weight. Even though I liked the previously plump Carl, now that you’ve turned thinner, you suddenly became popular… That’s why rather than an average girl like me, a beautiful girl like that adventurer would have been better, right?!”

‘Uwaa—an!’

At the same time as the cries could be heard, a woman went down from the second floor with an amazing force. Then she slipped through us and went out of the door.

“Mary, wait—ah…”

Carl-san who went down after her had slightly droopy eyes and seemed like a nice young man.

“I apologize for making you wait. Welcome, would you like to stay at this inn?”

“Yeah. That’s right, but… Don’t you have to run after her?”

Ar-niisama pointed at the door and Carl-san gave a wry smile in return.

“I run an inn, so the guests are my priority. …My wife too, she will return once her heads cool down.”

So Mary-san who just left was his wife. Which means, that golden ring is the wedding ring, isn’t it?

As I was thinking about that, Amanda-san took out the ring we just picked up.

“We heard your conversation a bit… The ring you lost, is this the ring?”

Carl-san who looked at the ring had his eyes widen in surprise.

“T-that is! Could I look at it?”

“Yeah. Here you go.”

Carl-san received the ring and read the words written on the undersurface of the ring that said: ‘From Mary to Carl’.

“I-it is indeed my ring. Where did you find this…?”

“Inside a Giant Rat’s stomach.”

“—Eh?”

“While we were on our way here, a mutated Giant Rat attacked, and the ring appeared after we defeated it.”

“A mutant?! Moreover, a Giant Rat… Just how in the world could this ring end up in such a place…?”

Carl-san grasped the ring tightly upon hearing Amanda-san’s explanation.

“In the first place, where did you lose this ring? There’s no trace of the barrier being damaged, so it wasn’t somewhere within the village?”

“That is…”

Carl-san hesitated to speak, but then he invited us to the dining hall by saying, “It’s a long story, so please come here.”

Frank-san and the others who were checking out the sake also sat down on the nearby table.

And the story we heard from Carl-san went as following.

Carl-san was born as the second son of this village’s inn’s head and yearned to become an adventurer from when he was young.

Then, during the Monster Flood eight years ago, the adventurers that challenged the Monster King alongside the hero would often stop by this village and stayed at this inn.

“That person’s family also ran an inn. But it was destroyed during the Monster Flood that happened 28 years ago… At that time, only he was saved because he happened to go to a relative’s house, and he said that he became an adventurer in order to keep on living.”

As he said that, Carl-san gazed at the axe that was displayed on the wall of the dining hall’s interior.

Decorating the wall was two axes that were crossing each other. One of the axes was in a worn-out state with a chip in the blade, to the point that it seemed like it couldn’t be utilized anymore.

“The one who brought Thor-san’s axes at that time was Tania’s party. They were inviting me to the party if I had a talent in axe-wielding since it would be nice if I could become an adventurer succeeding Thor, but I refused since I was thinking I’d like to run an inn in his place once Thor-san’s village was restored. Thus, I trained my axe-wielding skills while helping out in the inn.”

“I see. It must be hard training by yourself.”

Frank-san said in admiration with his arms crossed. Carl-san nodded in response and said, “That’s right,” while looking at the axes hung on the wall.

“But thanks to that, I didn’t have any trouble with stocking firewood.”

Eh, firewood?!

While training with the axes, he was making firewood?!

But with many magical tools available, rather than using firewood, it would be easier to use the magical burner, wouldn’t it?

As I was wondering about that, according to Carl-san’s explanation, using firewood for cooking would result in a more delicious food, so magical tools such as the magical burner wasn’t that popular.

Besides, there weren’t that many travelers going to the Graham village with the exception of when people were going back and forth to Izel fort during the Monster Flood, so he wanted to have people who were staying over to have delicious meals.

Certainly, people would be more inclined to visit again if they were happy with the nice meals they ate here.

In addition… That was why during the magic practices, Amanda-san made that many firewood…

Since the meals at the Izel fort were really delicious, I think the meals there were really made using firewood.

Thus, I was readily convinced about the usage of firewood for a more delicious food.
